When the adjective qualifies a noun, which has a definite article, the adjective takes the article!

I. Definite article of masculine adjectives

Masculine adjectives add the endings -èÿ, -èÿò.

íîâ íîâèÿ íîâèÿò
ñòàð ñòàðèÿ ñòàðèÿò
ñèí ñèíèÿ ñèíèÿò

The adjectives ending in –è in masculine add the endings -ÿ, -ÿò.

ãðàäñêè ãðàäñêèÿ ãðàäñêèÿò

The rule about using the complete article (-ÿò, -èÿò) is the same as for the nouns - if the adjective qualifies the subject in the sentence or when it is the subject itself*, then the complete article is used.

*Some adjectives can function like nouns sometimes and in those cases they can be the subject of the sentence.

For example: áëèçúê (adj) – close (adj), relative (n)

Examples:

Òîé îòèâà â ãðàäà. He goes to the city.
Òîé îòèâà â ãîëåìèÿ ãðàä. He goes to the big city.
Ñòîëúò å óäîáåí. The chair is comfortable.
